Ouziel Quarter
On the eastern side of Thessaloniki, next to the Alatina villa, we find a nostalgic oasis from the Thessaloniki of the past, a complex of houses that all have tiled roofs and elegant wooden windows, courtyards with bougainvillea and rose bushes and the scent of mandarin and lemon trees, in what was once the most beautiful district of the city, the famous Exochoi district with the luxurious country villas of the wealthy Thessalonians.
The 28 single-family houses of the Ouziel Quarter were built in 1927 to designs by architect Jacques Moshe by David Ouziel, one of the main shareholders of the Thessaloniki Tramway Company (tram). These doll-like houses with their distinctive courtyards were intended to house the company’s employees. The entire settlement of Uziel was declared a protected site in 1984. Most of the houses in the settlement are preserved in very good condition.
